From $35 a day to a 9-year-old business

by Nur Izyan Qisya, 8, and Nur Izzah Qistina, 10

We went to Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre to interview Ms Renee Tan, 34. She is the stall owner of “Can’t Stop Eating Toast”.

As we were sitting down, she came up to us and kindly offered us drinks before the interview started.

Ms Tan opened her stall on 1 December 2011. She is in charge of making toast while her husband makes the coffee.

It was not easy when Ms Tan and her husband first started their business. “I was earning $35 a day at the beginning because my stall is located all the way at the back. There are a lot of coffee stalls here, and a customer told me I would only last for 6 months and will not succeed,” Ms Tan said.

But she did not give up. The stall eventually gained more customers and has now been around for 9 years.

Ms Tan shared that she and her husband started the business because she loved coffee and toast. “Before I was a stall owner, I was a sales associate and my husband worked in Toast Box. Every day, I would go and buy coffee and bread for my breakfast and sometimes, for my lunch. There, I met him and we got into a relationship and we got married,” she shared.

We also found out that Ms Tan usually goes to bed around 8pm and will wake up at 5am. Her husband wakes up at 4am. She said that this is because it takes up to 2 hours to boil the water they need before the stall opens!
